UHM Properties (formerly United Housing Management) is undergoing an exciting growth phase. We are creating powerful strategic partnerships and expanding our capacity and capabilities for asset management. While extending our reach throughout Massachusetts, we have changed our name to UHM Properties. Adhering to our founding principles, our new name and mission reflects a commitment to significantly broadening our ability to better serve property owners, developers, and residents.

Our History

When the Guscott brothers (Kenneth, Cecil, and George) decided to retire from residential property management in 2002, the founders of Long Bay Management Company (LBMC) sought to continue the LBMC legacy of providing safe, decent, affordable housing in the community. Eight senior staff members, each with over 10 years of service at LBMC, purchased the LBMC residential portfolio. The new partners formed United Housing Management (UHM) that opened for business on January 1, 2003.

Today, UHM Properties manages over 1,400 housing units. We have generated an extraordinary track record for property management services, delivering profitability for owners and growing the local economy of our managed communities – all while providing quality service to our residents.

Meet Our Team

Senior Leadership

A Partner of UHM Properties since its inception in 2003, Kevin currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of UHM.

As CEO, Kevin is responsible for overseeing all management decisions, creating and implementing strategy, setting and meeting all long- and short-term goals, and serving as UHM’s primary spokesperson.

In 1987, Kevin launched his professional career in the housing industry as a Maintenance Supervisor. He rose through the ranks as an Assistant Property Manager, Property Manager, Senior Property Manager, and Regional Manager.

Kevin Bynoe
Chief Executive Officer

A Partner in UHM since the founding in 2003, Sheila currently oversees the Director of Compliance and Training at UHM .

Sheila has over 25 years of experience in the property management industry in management and tax credits. She started with Long Bay Management Company in 1984 as a Property Manager, and assumed the position of Senior Property Manager in 1992. In 1995, she was promoted to Regional Manager.

She became the Director of Operations in 1996, assuming oversight of the Operations Department. In 2000, with her depth of experience in tax credit and governmental regulations, she was promoted to Director of Compliance and Training.

Sheila Harper
Director of Compliance and Training

A Partner in the company’s ownership since its formation in 2003, Patricia currently serves as the Director of Human Resources.

Starting out at Long Bay Management Company, Patricia’s experience in Human Resources spans over 20 years, She provides overall human resource leadership within UHM Properties, while overseeing all business relationships between the company and our employees.

While developing policies and procedures, she oversees benefits administration, employee relations, hiring and retention, training and development, and performance management. Patricia is also Manager for UHM’s Resident Services Department.

Patricia Farr
Director of Human Resources

Chris joined UHM Properties in 2007 as Manager of Real Estate Development, he was later promoted to Director of Real Estate Development and most recently to Director of Business Development.

Chris is responsible for cultivating new business opportunities including acquisitions of existing properties and portfolios, as well as new construction and renovation prospects and serves as a liaison between UHM and its clients.

Christopher Shepherd
Director of Business Development

Everton joined UHM Properties in 2003 as Maintenance Supervisor and was later promoted to Director of Maintenance.

Everton is responsible for the supervision and administration of the portfolio’s maintenance programs and makes recommendations to the CEO and Director of Human Resources on all aspects of maintenance operations and personnel.

Director of Maintenance

As Vice President of Operations, Mendes plans, directs, coordinates and oversees operations activities to ensure that UHM remains profitable and sustainable. She reports to UHM CEO Kevin Bynoe and all staff report to her.

A Dorchester resident, Mendes wants to help UHM grow to become more visible, more competitive and enhance the communities of Greater Boston and beyond. She also would like to see UHM provide more learning opportunities for residents including financial literacy, homeownership, computer skills, and job search. Mendes sees UHM as a major source for providing and maintaining affordable housing in communities where displacement and gentrification loom large. Mendes says, “In addition to our successful property management, we want to show residents a path to possible homeownership which can lead to equity and generational wealth.”

Genesa Mendes
Vice President of Operations

Jeff joined UHM Properties in 2016 and currently serves as the company’s Chief Financial Officer. He and his team provide financial and accounting support for all company activities.

Jeff also oversees all financing and banking functions, and is responsible for external audits, tax reporting, and budgeting. He provides strategic support in helping UHM achieve its financial and growth objectives.

Chief Financial Officer

Winnie joined UHM Properties in 2003 as Support Coordinator; she was later promoted to Director of Administration and most recently to Chief Operating Officer.

Winnie is responsible for day-to-day operations and is an integral member of the leadership team making decisions that impact UHM’s residents and clients, all the while ensuring policies and procedures are compliant with HUD and other regulatory agencies.

Kevin Bynoe
Chief Executive Officer

It was this fundamental belief that inspired the foundation of UHM Properties’ Neighborhood Network Center (NNC). As a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1998 by our founding partners and its residents, NNC offers extensive opportunities through programs and services that foster personal, educational, and community development.

As our business has grown, so has our commitment to the communities where we live and work. Since its creation, UHM Properties’ Neighborhood Network Center has expanded its offerings to include customized programming for seniors, working age adults, families, and school age youth. Twenty years later, NNC remains committed to partnering with public and private organizations to address known gaps in access and opportunity.

NNC: By the numbers

As of 2016, NNC had served over 500 UHM Properties’ residents and members of the community through onsite programming and partnerships.
In 2015, with the support of UHM Properties, NNC became the sponsor of the first Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® Summer Program in the city of Boston and the second in the state of Massachusetts.
70% of the residents and community members who have participated in leadership and personal empowerment initiatives through NNC are graduates or are currently in schools of higher education.
